                                 Sundial of the month March

                                     Double line-of-light sundial

Instead of a pole style shadow, a line of light may be used to read a sundial.

The horizontal sundial shown here forms a line of light using the slit between two east-west aligned stone slabs.

The slabs are inclined according to local latitude.

Idea and realisation: sculptor Liesbeth Crooijmans, Arnhem, 2007
Internet site of Liesbeth Crooijmans

Pattern calculation: Fer de Vries

Location: in a private garden in the north of The Netherlands

Material: black granite

Bedplate dimensions: 600 mm x 800 mm (24 in x 31 in).

                                http://www.liesbethcrooijmans.nl/

Don't miss to have an intensive look!

From a message to the Sundial Mailing List

on November 25, 2009:

Friends,

Because of problems with the program ZW2000 in 64 bit computers the program is updated to version 2.0.
Now the program runs in both 32 and 64 bit computers.

The updated version is for download at:

http://www.de-zonnewijzerkring.nl/downloads/zw2000version2.zip

Culmination sundial

"Culmination Sundial" is the title of an article1) in English by Ortwin Feustel, Germany, published December 2012.
The name is new in gnomonics, but the writer says that the principle was previously known in literature. The article thoroughly and mathematically explains the operation of the sundial.

In principle, this sundial is a flat surface that can be rotated about an east-west axis.
In the centre, square to the surface, there is a gnomon, the end point of which serves as a shadow caster for the pattern of hour and date lines.

The gnomon is aimed at the culmination point of the sun for the actual day.

That is the point where the sun is at the moment of true noon; the highest point of its daily arc, and exactly north, south, or zenith.

The culmination sundial is latitude independent, and could be used as a travel sundial.
Below is the pattern of the sundial, showing the hour lines of 8 o'clock in the morning to 4 o'clock in the afternoon, and the date lines for the solstices and the equinoxes.

When horizontal, this pattern is correct for the equator on the equinoxes.

The culmination height of the sun is then 90°, and the gnomon points to the zenith. The inclination of the plane is 0°.
At the solstices, the culmination here would be at 66.5° and either north or south, and so the inclination of the sundial plane would have to be 23.5°.

In general, on the equator, the inclination of the plane would always be equal to the absolute value of the solar declination.

Within the tropics, the direction of the plane is to the north, the zenith, or the south, depending on the date.
Outside the tropics, the plane is always aimed south in the northern hemisphere, and north in the southern hemisphere.

east

As stated earlier, the pattern of the culmination sundial is independent of latitude.
The same sundial can therefore be used on any latitude, which makes it suitable for use as a travel sundial.
In his article, Ortwin Feustel suggests a possible implementation.
On a pedestal is a half cylinder, the flat surface of which serves as the sundial.
The cylinder surface is marked in degrees, enabling it to be set for the actual culmination height.
This sketch follows his example.

Extra

In the culmination sundial, all date lines go through the foot of the gnomon.
In the first figure, three are drawn, for the beginning of the four seasons.

Below is another sundial on which these three date lines go through a single point.
However, here this is achieved by using separate gnomons for each date line.

These three gnomons are on a north-south line, and their end points coincide with an imaginary pole style. The shadows of the gnomon tips therefore all fall on the correct hour lines of the sundial.

Beyond the image of the date curves, there is no relationship with the culmination sundial.

Advertisement for Pilkington & Gibbs Sundial

The advertisement below was in Time national newspaper of 14 September 1910.
Karine van Drunen found the advert in the on-line archives of the Royal Library in The Hague. It is clearly a Pilkington & Gibbs sundial, here referred to as a Helio-Chronometer.The sundial is mounted on a fine pedestal.

pag-13-01-01.jpg
1910 advert

A search on the internet produced this photo, of a sundial just like the one in the ad.
Is it the same? Unfortunately there were no further details that could confirm this.

pag-13-01-02.jpg
Internet photo without further data

The associates Pilkington and Gibbs made various models of their Heliochronometer.
At first they operated jointly, but later each went his own way, and more differences appeared in their sundials.
The photo below shows another sundial by these partners in more detail. This dial is in Canada.

pag-13-01-03.jpg
"Pilkington and Gibbs" sundial in Canada

The "Pilkington & Gibbs" dial is an equatorial sundial with an evenly divided hour scale.
This hour scale can be rotated to adjust for the longitude of the location.

There is a sight on the sundial, which is turned into the sun.
It then shows the time on the hour scale.

On the rotating hour scale is fitted a rotating date scale, used to adjust for the equation of time. The EoT cam rotates the sight the required number of minutes with respect to the hour scale. This makes the sundial show clock time.

The sundial can be set up for the desired latitude, so that it can be used almost anywhere.

More information about two "Pilkington & Gibbs" sundials is in the Bulletin of De Zonnewijzerkring, issue 94.4 (1994).
That article also mentions the advert above.

The 2000 Sawyer Dialing Prize for Fer J. de Vries

At the 2000 NASS Conference in San Francisco, CA, Fred Sawyer announced the presentation of the first annual Sawyer Dialing Prize to Fer J. de Vries “in recognition of his many years of dedication to dialing, and in gratitude for his development of Zonwvlak and his always helpful encouragement and support of the global dialing community.”

Fer could not attend the conference, but he sent a letter of appreciation asking that the cash award be donated in his name to the University of California Regents for use as a one-time prize fund for U.C. Berkeley’s Architecture 140 course where students are required to make a sundial.

Sundial of the month November

Equatorial sundial

In Bolivia, a splendidly carved wooden pedestal supports this stone equatorial sundial made by Nani Morello.
Bolivia is in the southern hemisphere, but is quite close to the equator, and so the sundial is nearly upright.
Both north and south sides of the sundial are therefore easily read.

I have advised, through email, on the design of this sundial, using my ZW2000 software.
There are more photographs on the erection of this sundial on the site of Reinhold Kriegler, Germany.
These international contacts lend an extra dimension to contemporary interest in gnomonics.

Dear all,

I deeply regret to inform you that Fer de Vries, honorary member of the
Dutch Sundial Society, passed away on April 1, at the age of 78. The
funeral service was held today privately. He suffered from a stroke two
years ago, from which he only partially recovered.

He was a pivotal member of our society, which he joined right after its
birth in 1978. He served as treasurer for 9 years and as secretary for
another 19 years. In the meantime, he contributed some 200 articles to
our Bulletin.

Many of you have known him, or at least his work, among which were
important contributions to the science of gnomonics. His software
ZW2000, which he freely made available to the international sundialling
community, was used by many. He cooperated with many sundialists abroad.
He won the first Sawyer Dialing Prize in 2000.

We lose a generous, devoted, enthousiastic and productive person and
diallist.

If you would like to contact his family directly, the address for
correspondence is:
Stationsweg 136
5611 BZ Eindhoven
The Netherlands

On behalf of the Dutch Sundial Society,
Frans Maes, secretary

Eine wunderbare Idee von Luigi Ghia -

in der Sonnenuhren-Mailingliste aus Köln

publiziert:

I would like to offer my personal condolences and those of the italian gnomonic community.
My father died on April 01 of 4 years ago. That strange coincidence!
I consider Fer as one of my gnomonic fathers. Indeed Fer de Vries was among the first to publish a free software for calculation of sundials, and was among the first to disclose the calculation algorithm.
Thanks to him I was able to realize many years ago my first program in Basic.
Fer was the pioneer of algorithms based on vector algebra, and through this method, others after him, were able to calculate sundials ever more complex.
Thanks Fer for having existed!
Now it's up to us to make sure that your track in this world is not forgotten.
It would be nice for the whole gnomonic community in the world whether the Dutch gnomonic society would gather and  publish all his gnomonic opera.
As editor of the magazine Orologi Solari I assure our full collaboration.
My best salutation to all.
Luigi Ghia
